Import Essentials for Trinidad & Tobago
Five things to know before you choose a car. Each links to the official Trinidad and Tobago source.
Vehicle age
For personal imports the 2026 Ministry guidelines allow petrol, diesel and CNG vehicles up to 8 years from the year of manufacture, hybrids up to 3 years and electric vehicles up to 2 years.
Import licence
Individuals apply through TTBizLink for a licence in their own name. One vehicle may be imported every four years. Vans, pickups and trucks need a registered business licence.
Inspection
The car must be structurally sound, use an ozone-friendly air-conditioning refrigerant and pass a Transport Commissioner inspection before registration.
Destination port: Port of Spain
We ship RoRo to Port of Spain. Container shipping is quoted on request.
Customs and registration
The cancellation certificate with engine and chassis numbers and the age verification travel with the bill of lading. Your broker handles customs.
Age limits depend on the fuel type and are counted from the year of manufacture.

Buying a Japanese Car for Trinidad & Tobago: FAQs
How do I buy a Japanese car for Trinidad & Tobago?
Obtain your import licence through TTBizLink first, then tell us the model and budget. We find the car at auction or in stock, check its year of manufacture and fuel type, and ship RoRo to Port of Spain with the export papers.
How to buy from KTJAPANHow old can a car be for personal import?
The Ministry’s 2026 guidelines allow petrol, diesel and CNG vehicles up to 8 years from the year of manufacture, hybrids up to 3 years and electric vehicles up to 2 years. The manufacture year counts, not the first registration date. Rules have changed recently, so we re-check before you bid.
Source: Ministry guidelines 2026Which models are enquired about for Trinidad & Tobago?
Buyers ask about the Toyota Yaris, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Raize, Honda Fit and RAV4. These are enquiry topics, not sales rankings. A hybrid has a much shorter age limit than a petrol car, so tell us the fuel type you prefer.
Toyota RAV4 guideWhat inspection does the car need?
Before registration the vehicle must pass a Transport Commissioner inspection. It must also be structurally sound and use an ozone-friendly air-conditioning refrigerant. We check these points on the auction sheet and photos where we can.
Source: Ministry guidelines 2026Do I need an import licence?
Yes for right-hand-drive used vehicles. Individuals apply online through TTBizLink for a licence in their own name and may import one vehicle in a four-year period. New vehicles do not need a licence. Commercial vehicles need a business licence.
Source: TTBizLinkCan a private buyer import a pickup or van?
The Ministry states that panel vans, pickups and trucks can only be imported by registered businesses with a licence in the company’s name. A private buyer should choose a passenger car or work through a licensed importer.

We ship RoRo to Port of Spain and quote container shipping on request. Send the model and we give you a freight quote for that car.
Shipping from JapanWhat do FOB, C&F and CIF mean?
FOB is the car loaded in Japan. C&F adds freight to Port of Spain and CIF adds insurance. Duties, taxes, the broker’s fee and registration costs in Trinidad and Tobago are not included.
FOB, C&F and CIF explainedHow do I pay and what is the auction security deposit?
Pay KTJAPAN by international bank transfer (T/T) against your invoice. We confirm payment after the funds are verified. For auction purchases a refundable security deposit is needed before we bid.
Auction deposit and payment termsCan dealers or companies source vehicles through KTJAPAN?
Yes, if the company holds the right import licence. Send your models, years and quantity and we source against that brief. We do not import for licence holders who cannot show an approved licence.
