Import Essentials for Tanzania
Five things to know before you choose a vehicle. Each links to the official Tanzanian source.
Vehicle age
We found no age ban for used vehicles. TRA charges additional excise duty on older vehicles, and your clearing agent confirms the current threshold and rate for your model.
Regulatory approval
Used vehicles from Japan are verified for conformity before shipping under TBS’s PVoC programme. We have not found a separate import permit for ordinary used vehicles.
Inspection in Japan
The inspection takes place in Japan, not on arrival. TBS’s notice names EAA as the authorised agent, and we book it at the export yard.
Destination port: Dar es Salaam
We ship RoRo to Dar es Salaam. Book the inspection as soon as the car reaches the yard so it does not miss the sailing.
Customs clearance
TRA assesses duty and taxes and a clearing agent files the declaration. KTJAPAN quotes FOB and C&F to Dar es Salaam, not Tanzanian duty.
We found no age ban, but older vehicles pay more excise duty.

Buying a Japanese Car for Tanzania: FAQs
How do I buy a Japanese vehicle for Tanzania?
Choose a vehicle from our stock or ask us to find one at auction. We arrange the pre-export inspection, prepare the export papers and ship to Dar es Salaam. Your clearing agent then handles TRA duty and taxes.
How to buy from KTJAPANDoes Tanzania have a vehicle age limit?
We found no age ban. TRA charges additional excise duty on older vehicles, and commercial sites commonly mention an eight-year threshold that your agent should confirm. The cost of age matters more than a cutoff, so ask for a landed-cost estimate before you bid.
Source: Tanzania Revenue AuthorityWhich models do Tanzanian buyers ask about?
Enquiries cover the Toyota RAV4, Land Cruiser Prado, Hiace, Coaster and Mitsubishi Canter. These are enquiry topics, not sales rankings. Passenger vehicles, buses and trucks can be treated differently, so we confirm each vehicle’s class.
Toyota Prado guideWhere is the vehicle inspected?
In Japan. TBS requires used vehicles from Japan to be verified before shipping under its PVoC programme, and its notice names EAA as the authorised agent. We book the inspection at the export yard.
Source: TBS PVoC noticeDo I need an import permit?
We have not found a separate import permit for ordinary used vehicles. The TBS conformity certificate is the key document, and your clearing agent confirms anything else that applies to your vehicle class.
Source: Tanzania Bureau of StandardsCan you ship trucks and buses to Dar es Salaam?
Yes, we source Hiace vans, Coaster buses and Canter light trucks and quote shipping by size. Heavier vehicles may need different shipping and have their own excise treatment, so tell us the model and year.
Shipping from JapanWhat do FOB, C&F and CIF mean?
FOB is the vehicle loaded in Japan, C&F adds freight to Dar es Salaam and CIF adds insurance. TRA duty, excise, port charges and the clearing agent’s fee are paid in Tanzania.
FOB, C&F and CIF explainedHow do Japanese auctions work for Tanzania?
Tell us the model, year range and budget. We search auctions, send translated auction sheets with an estimate, and bid only up to the maximum you set.
How Japanese car auctions workHow do I pay and what is the security deposit?
Pay by international bank transfer (T/T) against your KTJAPAN invoice. We confirm once funds are verified. A refundable security deposit is needed before we bid at auction.
Auction deposit and payment termsCan I buy for onward sale in Tanzania or for transit to other countries?
Dealers can source several vehicles through us. Dar es Salaam also handles transit cargo for neighbouring countries, but the duty and clearing rules differ, so tell us the final destination when you ask for a quote.
