Import Essentials for New Zealand
Five things to know before you choose a car. Each links to the official New Zealand source.
Vehicle age
There is no fixed age limit. The car must meet the New Zealand standards for its date of manufacture, so age alone does not make it eligible.
Entry certification
Every imported vehicle needs entry certification from an approved inspector and then a Warrant of Fitness before it can be registered.
Proof of standards
NZTA accepts the original MLIT export certificate showing the type designation number and model code. A kai mark means the car was modified, so check it with a certifier first.
Destination port: Auckland
We ship RoRo to Auckland. Container shipping is quoted on request.
Biosecurity and customs
Vehicles are inspected at the border for biosecurity risks, so we clean each car before loading. Customs charges and GST are assessed in New Zealand.
New Zealand has no fixed age limit. Eligibility depends on the standards for the car’s build date.

Buying a Japanese Car for New Zealand: FAQs
How do I buy a Japanese car for New Zealand?
Choose a car from our stock or ask us to find one at auction. We check the export certificate codes, clean the car for biosecurity, and ship it RoRo to Auckland. After arrival an approved certifier does the entry certification.
How to buy from KTJAPANIs there an age limit for cars imported to New Zealand?
No fixed limit. NZTA requires the car to meet emissions, frontal-impact and other standards that depend on its build date, so a newer car is not automatically accepted and an older one can qualify.
Source: NZTA: importing a vehicleWhich models do New Zealand buyers ask about?
Enquiries cover the Toyota Aqua, Prius, RAV4, Mazda CX-5 and Subaru Forester. These are enquiry topics, not sales rankings. Each car still has to meet the standards for its build date.
Toyota Aqua guideWhat is a TDN and why does it matter?
The type designation number on the Japanese export certificate, with the model code, tells NZTA which standards the car was built to. We read both before you bid and warn you about any kai mark, which signals a modification.
Source: NZTA: used vehicles from JapanWhat inspection does the car need?
Entry certification by an approved inspector, covering safety, emissions and frontal impact, followed by a Warrant of Fitness before registration. This happens in New Zealand, after the car arrives.
Source: NZTA: importing a vehicleDoes the car need electronic stability control?
NZTA requires ESC on Class MC vehicles entering from 1 March 2016. We check whether a listed car has it. Other classes follow their own standards, so we match each model to its class first.
Source: NZTA: used vehicles from JapanHow is the car shipped to Auckland?
We ship RoRo to Auckland and quote container shipping on request. Cars are cleaned for biosecurity before loading. Send the model and we give you a freight quote.
Shipping from JapanWhat do FOB, C&F and CIF mean?
FOB is the car loaded in Japan, C&F adds freight to Auckland and CIF adds insurance. New Zealand customs charges, GST, entry certification and registration costs are paid locally.
FOB, C&F and CIF explainedHow do T/T payments and auction deposits work?
Pay KTJAPAN by international bank transfer (T/T) against your invoice. We confirm payment once funds are verified. Auction bidding needs a refundable security deposit first.
Auction deposit and payment termsCan New Zealand dealers source several cars?
Yes. Send models, build years and volume. We search auctions against your brief and check the certificate codes on each car, which keeps the cost of failed certification low.
