Import Essentials for Kenya
Five things to know before you choose a car. Each links to the official Kenyan source.
Vehicle age
KS 1515 sets an eight-year limit from first registration. For arrivals in 2026 only right-hand-drive vehicles first registered in 2019 or later are accepted. The cutoff moves each January.
Regulatory approval
Used vehicles need a KEBS Certificate of Roadworthiness. Your clearing agent also files the Import Declaration Form with KRA.
Inspection in Japan
Quality Inspection Services Inc. Japan inspects the car before shipping and issues the certificate. We book it at the export yard.
Destination port: Mombasa
We ship RoRo or by container to Mombasa. We plan the sailing so the car arrives before its age cutoff.
Customs clearance
KRA assesses duty and taxes and your clearing agent works out the figure before you bid. A car that misses the cutoff can be rejected at the importer’s expense.
Kenya accepts used vehicles up to eight years from first registration, and only right-hand drive.

Buying a Japanese Car for Kenya: FAQs
Which cars can I import to Kenya in 2026?
Right-hand-drive vehicles first registered in 2019 or later, under the eight-year limit in KS 1515. A 2018 car that arrives in 2026 can be rejected at the importer’s expense. We shortlist only cars inside the cutoff and plan the sailing around it.
Source: KEBSIs the age counted from manufacture or first registration?
From the year of first registration, as shown on the Japanese export certificate. We check the registration month on the auction sheet and the sailing date before you bid, because the car has to arrive in Kenya before its cutoff.
Source: KEBSWhich models do Kenyan buyers ask about?
Enquiries often cover the Toyota Probox, Corolla Fielder, Axio, Harrier, Mazda CX-5 and Hiace. These are enquiry topics, not sales rankings. Tell us your budget and use and we shortlist cars inside the cutoff year.
Toyota Fielder guideWho inspects the car in Japan?
KEBS uses an appointed company, Quality Inspection Services Inc. Japan, to inspect used vehicles before shipping and issue the Certificate of Roadworthiness. We book the inspection at the export yard.
Source: KEBSDo I need an import permit?
Kenya requires the Certificate of Roadworthiness and an Import Declaration Form, which your clearing agent files with KRA. We have not found a separate permit for ordinary used cars, so ask your agent to confirm before you bid.
Source: Kenya Revenue AuthorityIs left-hand drive allowed?
No. Kenya accepts right-hand-drive vehicles only, so we offer you right-hand-drive cars only. This applies to returning residents as well as commercial importers.
Source: KEBSHow is the car shipped to Mombasa?
RoRo or container, depending on the car and your budget. We quote both when both are available and book the sailing so the car lands before the age cutoff. Ask for a quote for your model.
RoRo or container shippingWhat do FOB, C&F and CIF mean for Kenya?
FOB is the car loaded in Japan, C&F adds freight to Mombasa and CIF adds marine insurance. KRA duty, taxes, port charges and your clearing agent’s fee are paid in Kenya and are not part of these prices.
FOB, C&F and CIF explainedHow do I pay, and is a security deposit needed?
Pay KTJAPAN by bank transfer (T/T) against your invoice and send the reference. We confirm payment once funds are verified. Auction bidding needs a refundable security deposit first.
Auction deposit and payment termsCan Kenyan dealers buy several cars?
Yes. Send models, years and volume. We source against your brief inside the cutoff year and quote each car separately. Because the cutoff moves every January, dealers often plan their orders by arrival quarter.
