IMPORT ESSENTIALS

Import Essentials for the Bahamas

Five things to know before you choose a car. Each links to the official Bahamian source.

Vehicle age

We could not confirm a current official age limit. A 2019 notice from the Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality set 10 years, so we check the current rule before we bid.

Import permit

No import permit for ordinary used cars is confirmed. Check with Bahamas Customs and your broker before buying.

Inspection

A 2019 notice required a pre-shipment conformity certificate for vehicles from Japan. We confirm whether it still applies before shipping.

Destination port: Nassau

We ship to Nassau. For Family Island delivery, your broker arranges the onward inter-island freight.

Customs clearance

Duty, excise and VAT depend on the vehicle type and value, and rates have changed recently. Ask your customs broker for the current figure.

We could not confirm a current age limit, so we check it with you before any bid.

Is there an age limit for used cars in the Bahamas?

We could not confirm a current official limit. A 2019 notice from the Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality gave 10 years for cars, while other sites quote different figures. We check the current rule with you before we place any bid.

Which vehicles suit the Bahamas?

Buyers ask about the Honda Fit, Nissan Note, Toyota Aqua, RAV4 and Sienta. These are enquiry topics, not sales rankings. We choose cars with a compact body and economical engine and confirm eligibility first.

Does the car need an inspection?

A 2019 notice asked for a pre-shipment conformity certificate for vehicles from Japan. We confirm whether that still applies, and the Road Traffic Department registers the car after clearance.

Do I need an import permit?

We have not confirmed a permit for ordinary used cars. Bahamas Customs publishes the official import information, and your broker confirms what applies to your vehicle before you commit.

How is the car shipped to Nassau?

We ship to Nassau and quote RoRo as the standard method. If you live on a Family Island, your broker arranges the onward inter-island freight. Ask for a quote for your model.

Shipping from Japan
What are FOB, C&F and CIF?

FOB is the car loaded in Japan, C&F adds freight to Nassau and CIF adds insurance. Bahamian duty, excise, VAT and broker charges are extra and depend on the vehicle, so ask your broker for them.

FOB, C&F and CIF explained
Can I buy through Japanese auctions?

Yes. We search the auctions we buy through, send translated auction sheets with an estimate, and bid only on cars you approve up to your maximum.

How Japanese car auctions work
How do T/T payments and deposits work?

Pay by international bank transfer (T/T) to the account on your KTJAPAN invoice. We confirm payment once funds are verified. Auction bidding needs a refundable security deposit first.

Payment methods
Can Bahamian dealers source several cars?

Yes. Send models, years and volume and we source against your brief. We confirm the rules for each model first, since a dealer shipment can be held at clearance if a car does not qualify.
